"The Willis Bros. are a tremendous resource"
-Monterey Herald

"Your columns are so beautiful. You should put all of these "essays" together into a book. The way you tie in surfing to philosophy, living a good life, serenity, and the inner life is sheer poetry full of richness."
-Karen

Qualcomm Reef

Do you know where Qualcomm reef is? If you're a Del Mar resident chances are you've been by it thousands of times.

In the old days surfers called it 15th street. Now days with so many corporate executives getting in their daily surf out there surfers jokingly refer to it as Qualcomm reef.
While not everyone who surfs this easily accessible spot is a Qualcomm employee or even a corporate board member, the fact remains that many Qualcomm reef (15th st.) surfers don't fit your average surfing stereotype. On any given day you will find all kinds of professional people out enjoying the waves.

Jeff Kelly owner of the internationally successful sandal company Sanuk can usually be seen doing his morning surf checks from the park before going off to run his footwear empire. David Vanderberg owner and C.E.O. of one of the largest fence companies in the world American Fence Co. shows up from time to time when ever he is in town to enjoy the soft, perfect rolling waves 15th street has to offer. Others like Scott Schwartz owner of Talent Vision Mgt. And Rick Kule head of Vestar Enterprises, as well as marketing agents, scientists, lawyers and doctors all have come to be regulars in the Del Mar surf scene.

Besides its' easy access there are many reasons for the intense popularity of this pristine beach. With the rocky reef bottom and southwestern direction the beach faces 15th street is usually a foot or two bigger than other waves in the area. It also has better formed waves that peel both right and left. The size of the reef is extensive, allowing for a broad area for surfers to catch waves.

It is not uncommon to ride waves two and three hundred yards long. Because the swells roll in softly even novice surfers can take advantage of the seemingly never-ending curls.

Some spots are reserved for veteran and hard core surfing enthusiasts, while 15th offers good waves for all levels. Another positive factor is the beach facilities that allow you to take a fresh water shower right after surfing. Great for people who can then easily put on a change of clothes and head right off to work with out skipping a beat. In fact surfing 15th street is so convenient that people can come down and catch a couple of waves in the morning before work or have lunch break at the surf break. For a lot of people "board meetings" are located on the outside peak.

Even those that don't surf can vicariously enjoy watching the waves and the surfers rides with the spectacular view that 15th street offers.
Great waves, beautiful clean surrounding environment, safe conditions, amenities and friendly people, it's easy to see why Qualcomm Reef is such a premiere surfing spot and why so many successful people love surfing out there!
See you in the water.
