Surfing Girls of Summer
An
ancient surfing axiom goes the best surfer is the one
having the most fun. Up until recently most of the fun
was being had by the guys. Not any longer.
More and more girls and women are getting into surfing
than ever before. If fact women's surfing is getting
so popular that products and services are springing
up all over the place. From surfing lessons for girls
by girls to television shows highlighting girl surfing,
to women surfing mags, wetsuits, fashions and women
surf clubs all exclusively for girls.
There
was a time not to long ago when it was rare to see women
in the waves. Surfers were pretty much all males. Teresa
Young has surfed since the age of 15 remembers when
she started there were no women wetsuits or leashes
either for that matter. Which meant if you fell of your
surfboard it could mean a long swim in back to the beach.
Teresa
got into surfing because it looked so fun she had to
try it. That was 35 years ago and she has kept it up
every since. Now many years later Teresa is a mother
and works full time as a partner with Deloitte and Touche
Accounting. With her hyper busy schedule time is a premium
but nothing keeps her from catching her weekly waves.
She prefers surfing to going to the gym and stays in
top shape. She also believes surfing all these years
has helped her to remain calm and relaxed and is a great
stress release. In fact she is so cool that co-workers
and friends have asked her if she meditates. Her surfing
is her meditation and she maintains that it is the best
use of time for anyone on a schedule.
Teresa
has inspired her family and quite a few of her friends
to pick up surfing. "Now all of the moms are getting
into it. I guess they feel that if Teresa can do it
I can to, it's great!" Her daughter 24-year-old
Regan also surfs. Growing up she recalls, "All
of the guys I grew up with knew my mom. Or they would
say, "Is that your mom?" "Everyone knew
her!"
Both Teresa and Regan are looking forward to surfing
this summer. For Regan surfing in summer is great because
she gets time off from school and everything is so beautiful.
Teresa feels the same way except she adds" summer
is great for families and the water is warm for kids
and moms."
Both Teresa and Regan feel girls have an advantage when
it comes to learning to surf. They feel girls are less
self-conscience about learning and also less competitive.
"Guys try to get good right away and that just
doesn't happen, while girls are happy just to paddle
out"
When these girls were asked if surfer girls have more
fun, the answer was a swift "YES" followed
by instant laughter. Maybe it's time the guys took some
notes from the girls. For the surfing girls of summer
it is all about fun!
