"The Willis Bros. are a tremendous resource"
-Monterey Herald

"Your columns are so beautiful. You should put all of these "essays" together into a book. The way you tie in surfing to philosophy, living a good life, serenity, and the inner life is sheer poetry full of richness."
-Karen

Mother's Day

Happy Mothers Day

Mother Nature's splendor and mystery are displayed everywhere we look, in every breath we take, every heartbeat, every moment. Every living thing depends on Mother Nature for survival and quality of life. All life suckles from the sweet bosom of Mother Nature. Mother Nature feeds us when we are hungry, heats us when we are cold, heals us when we are sick and also gives us waves to play with. Behind every ocean swell you find the breath of Mother Nature blowing. In every wave witness her formidable power and steadfast strength. Thank you and Happy Mothers day.

Many say the greatest love on earth is a mother's love for her child. Deeper than the sea, higher than the tallest swells, a mother's love may be more powerful than all the mighty waves in all oceans. A mother's love cannot be measured or weighed but it can be seen and it can be felt. Who -ever has a mother's full hearted unconditionally love has something that is more valuable than all the wealth in the world.
It is said: one of the greatest experiences ever is surfing. Perhaps the greatest of all experiences is motherhood. Nothing compares, but only a mom knows for sure. It seems being a good surfer would be much easier than being a good mom by far. Ride a few waves go home and party may work for surfers, but not so for moms. Unlike surfing, motherhood is a lifetime job with no days off in between the swells to rest. No one said motherhood would be easy. It is a lot of work and sometimes more difficult than paddling out on a twenty-foot day. Just like big wave surfers, you go it alone and take the waves as they come.

Many surfers feel surfing is a spiritual experience. With what mothers go through, motherhood just might be the ultimate learning and spiritual experience. Anyone can surf, but only a saint could put up with or do the things some moms do. Maybe the pope should bestow sainthood for all mothers.
Surfing the biggest waves on the planet would be a breeze compared to giving birth. For one thing, big wave surfers have generally surfed thousands upon thousands of waves to gain enough knowledge and skill to attempt such a feat. Big wave surfers get in a lot of practice in smaller waves usually advancing upward in wave size slowly after years of surfing. The best part of big wave surfing is if you don't like the wave your riding, you can usually get off it.
Prospective soon to be mom's, can read up, take classes, and study about child birth all day long, which does help them to prepare for child birth. But when it comes time to actually give birth, there are no dress rehearsals or practice sessions. Once the birth wave arrives, there is no turning out or getting off. Many women would prefer going over the falls on a large wave than going through childbirth. Of the two choices, wiping out would be a lot less painful. Bravery exemplified by big wave surfing, pales in comparison to a woman's bravery when she is about to and does, give birth to a child. The miracle of surfing a giant wave lasts for just a moment, the miracle of birth, a lifetime.

Experienced big wave surfers depend on master craftsman to shape a special surfboard needed for success in their quest of surfing huge waves. Every detail and contour is carefully engineered and crafted to ensure the highest levels of performance, dependability and success. The results of a well-shaped surfboard are often referred to as magic. These are the surfboards that make big wave surfing easier, even if it's never easy.

Babies depend on their mom whether she is a master or not. Infinitely more important than a big wave, a surfboard shapers work is a mother's work whose craftsmanship will shape an infants life. A child's performance in life starts with a mother's attention to detail.
Every mother shapes the foundation for success on which an entire life will ride. Children who grow up fully and unconditionally loved by their mothers. perform at their highest levels in all life endeavors thanks to her never ending guidance, encouragement and support along the way. Loving mothers have a tremendous influence and positive impact when it comes to shaping a child's successful future.
Thank you to Mother Nature and every mom, soon to be mom, adopted mom and all moms worldwide. Thank you for your love and nourishment. Thank you for warmth and comfort. Thank you for your healing touch. May your children's love be returned to you higher than a tidal wave and last an eternity.
Happy Mothers day. Sea you in the surf.
