W is for Waves
Surfers travel the world over in an
endless search of treasures, yielding waves that sparkle
with emerald and diamonds, along with adventures worth
more than oil. If living life to the fullest qualifies
as a rich life, surfers may very well be the wealthiest
of all. So when it comes to the popular letter "W",
it could stand for wealth and it does. But ask a surfer
what "W" stands for and they are likely to
quickly reply "W" stands for Waves.
Years ago there was what historians refer to as a gold
rush in California. People would come from all parts
of the United States in search of gold and more importantly
a better life. Now there is another rush for California
only this time the prize is much more valued than gold.
People by the thousands are coming to the west coast
with a dream to find waves and a better life.
The rush for waves is not exclusive to California. Surfers
have discovered waves from Canada to Maine and in between.
With advancements in wetsuit technology and the aid
of Vaseline on exposed parts of the body, Lake Superior
is now surfed regularly. There are those who live in
Minnesota who have been surfing for ten years who have
never left Minnesota. Waves have been discovered and
are now being surfed through out the Great Lakes.
Maybe it is a coincidence but the name of surfing's
premier big wave Waimea Bay also starts with a "W,"
and a capitol W at that. Here the "W" could
also stand for Worthy of the title as king of the big
waves.
Another very famous surfing spot that begins with a
"W" is Wind and Sea in La Jolla. The waves
and surfers of Wind and Sea have and continue to, play
an important role in the development of modern surfing.
"W" could stand for wild. With land development
everywhere, our natural mountains and plains have become
vast cement structures and endless roads leading to
everywhere. Open spaces are fewer and fewer. Mankind
is organic and needs to stay in touch with nature to
be balanced and healthy. Playing in the ocean is one
of the last remaining areas we can enter that is actually
in the wild . Being in the wild invigorates and makes
people feel alive.
Every wave has a cause that creates it called a disturbance.
The primary cause of waves is wind another "W."
Not only do winds produce waves they also promote good
health for humans. The next best thing to breathing
in the fresh air coming off the open sea while riding
waves is walking along or being near the seashore. Moving
water and fresh air produce valuable ions that benefit
health and help our immune systems to be strong. Wind
coming off the open ocean is the very best.
Other letters of the alphabet have meaning for surfers
also. Take the letter "S" for example. Ever
since the first surfer put a fin on a surfboard and
learned to turn, the "S- turn" has been a
basic maneuver. A surfer drops into a wave sliding right
or left then fluidly changes direction and just like
the shape of the letter S, smoothly returns to the original
direction. Doing "S-turns" is also proven
beneficial for health.
Perhaps vitamin C should actually begin
with an S for vitamin sea or changed all together to
vitamin W for waves.
W could certainly be for win or upside down an M which
could stand for miraculous, which is exactly what waves
are. Waves rise, roll, and return to whence they originated,
a never ending cycle of life not unlike our very own.
If one is trained to look, they can see what causes
the waves, where they came from and where they are going.
If you want to learn about anything, poetry, martial
arts, prosperity, friendship, love, about life itself,
learn about waves. People who love waves love life and
people who love life, love waves. "W" stands
for waves. Sea you in the surf.
