"The Willis Bros. are a tremendous resource"
-Monterey Herald

"Your columns are so beautiful. You should put all of these "essays" together into a book. The way you tie in surfing to philosophy, living a good life, serenity, and the inner life is sheer poetry full of richness."
-Karen

Surfing For Health and Fitness

In California one need only look up at the beautiful and awe inspiring coastal bluffs to see the influence the ocean waves have had on sculpting them. The relentless exposure to the pounding surf over thousands of years has formed every cave, nook and cranny of these pristine sea cliffs.
Ocean waves and pounding surf also help form and sculpt surferfs bodies. In fact long time surfers who regularly practice are cut and chiseled to a physical shape that can only come from surfing. Regular surfing practice also generates endurance, vitality, stamina and flexibility as well as a plethora of additional health benefits. The ocean could just be a true fountain of youth.

The physical results of surfing don't take years to happen for the human body. Instead they can be realized and felt within weeks and even days. Surfing is good for the bodies of boys and girls, men and women of all ages.
Witness Peter Cole, Rabbit Kekai, Fred Van Dyke and others who still manage to surf almost everyday. They are all in their late 60's, 70's and Rabbit - nearing 80 years young, still "rips" and maintains a powerful physique for any age. These guys all older, are all handsome in a rugged way and very healthy. They and others were recently featured in Bruce Brown's documentary "Surfing for Life", a film enjoyed by all ages. The amazing footage of them surfing shows and proves aging is really in the mind. Surfing helps bodies feel and look young, maintaining health and fitness, while having fun.
There is no greater workout gym than the ocean. Since the beginning of time those who dared to enter the sea all come back with transformed bodies full of strength and vitality.

Some people believe "surfers are lazy". In actuality, surfers are anything but lazy. After all who else gets up at dawn, sometimes climbing down and up steep cliffs, or walking long ways to paddle a few miles, get pounded on by waves and occasionally getting held down underneath the water. It takes a high energy person to be a surfer and high energy comes from surfing.

Surfers chase waves finding their pot of gold in the ocean, rewarded with a healthy mind, spirit and body. The ocean is health therapy for free. Plus you get the seawater sprayed on you like a Jacuzzi as a bonus. A teaspoon of ocean water is so full of life. Viewed under a microscope, its consistency is actually more like jell0 than water.
Perhaps the ocean really is a fountain of youth. The results on surfers bodies seem to prove this. It appears that surfers stay forever young.

The physical demands of surfing require good nutrients to give our bodies needed energy for wave riding. The following is a delicious smoothie recipe you can use as a high energy health drink before or after surfing or any activity for that matter. Sea you in the surf.
? cup rice dream (milk substitute)
? cup orange juice
? cup frozen strawberries
1 frozen banana chopped into small pieces
1 ? half of your favorite seasonal fruit: papaya, pineapple, avocado, etc. 1/2 cup your favorite fruit yogurt Blend until creamy Add 1/4 cup diced walnuts
Sprinkle with teaspoon of shredded coconut and or bee pollen, (optional)
