Shawn "Dogger" Stles: Against All Odds
If
everybody had an ocean then everybody would be surfing
all across the USA. The freeways would be a much better
place and traffic would flow more smoothly. Less people
would be driving because everyone would be surfing.
With deep understanding of timing and flow, drivers
would learn to surf navigate the super highways as they
do the oceans waves.
Using pragmatic judgment and super awareness gained
through surf realization, seemingly impossible situations
become possible. Affects of surfing expand beyond the
space time continuum and the brief time spent in the
ocean catching waves is known to change entire destinies.
Can a destiny be changed?
Surfing lessons learned in the sea are essentially transposed
into the sheet music of life. Surfing is an endless
cycle of waiting, watching, hunting, and catching. One
man who experienced these lessons first hand as a small
boy gives credit to the lessons learned through surfing
as well as his strong ties with family and the community
for his numerous successes in life.
As a young boy around 11 years old, his mother would
drop him and his younger brother off at La Jolla Shores.
Perhaps she knew this would lead to a passion that would
take her son around the world surfing exotic locations
such as Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Mexico and many
secret spots in between.
She knew these early waves combined with a love of the
environment and nature would have a profound effect
on the future of her sonfs life . At his young age
she had no idea what he would do when he grew up. Usually
itfs not about what you want that counts, itfs about
what you get. All his mother knew was that if she could
instill a healthy respect for nature and give love to
her son all would be fine. She loved the freedom her
son got from riding waves.
By waiting until he had a solid understanding of the
waves he gained valuable experience and confidence.
First waiting and then watching he learned that the
waves have patterns. If you wait long enough and watch
there will be an opening that will allow entry into
a world beyond the white wash. Through waiting and watching
he learned to identify opportunities that others perhaps
didnft. gThink, fast and wait.h Siddhartha
As
he grew his skills went beyond survival in the sea.
He became a wave hunter, recognizing the better waves
and going after them. Failure was not an option. He
started looking for more powerful waves and he found
them both in the water and on the land.
Today he is thankful for a lifestyle that revolves around
the ocean, an intelligent and beautiful girlfriend,
a successful career that he loves, in a major city in
southern California (7th largest economy in the world),
his own working production company, and a new line of
avant guard clothes. He still finds time to snowboard,
surf, and enjoy the finer things in life. James Bond
wishes he was this cool.
This surfer's name is Shawn Styles and you can see him
regularly on San Diegofs premiere news station kfmb
channel 8. Styles know first hand surfingfs cycle of
waiting, watching hunting and catching. Believe it or
not, Shawn Styles was told he didnft have the looks,
the knowledge or presence to be a television reporter.
Against most peoplefs odds Styles went for it. He succeeded
by waiting and watching for an opportunity and by hunting
for it, he was able to seize the moment (carpe diem)
catch it and own it.
Just like Shawn Styles and other surfers, you can learn
and benefit from the cycles of surfing. Learn to be
patient, be aware, take action, and accomplish the seemingly
impossible.
Dedicated to Irene Styles for setting Shawn Styles love
of the ocean in motion. Sea you in the surf!
