
Milton
and Michael Willis Began surfing in 1962 in Solana
Beach California. Along
with coach Al Southworth the Willis brothers helped
start the nations first ever surfing P.E. at San Dieguito
High School in 1972.
In 1998 the Willis brothers
pioneered big wave surfing lessons on the North Shore
of Oahu. Big wave surfers the Willis brothers
have worked with along the way include Australian
surfers Ross Clark-Jones, Cheyne Horan and Hawaiian
surfer Clyde Aikau. In 2000 they coauthored “Become
a Surfer”. Today they continue to educate and
inspire others by writing, lecturing and consulting
on the fascinating world of surfing.
Both Milton and Michael
began building surfboards in 1968 in Solana Beach
California. 
Recognized internationally as world
class foamsmiths the brothers contributed great
surfing designs that have gone
on to internationally influence big wave surfing and
all water board sports including surfing, body
boarding, wake boarding, and wind boarding with their
Phazer bottom design. It’s
said more Willis brothers
big wave surfboards have been surfed at Waimea
bay in Hawaii than any other surfboard. Great
surfers from Mark Foo to the Irons brothers
as well as thousands of surfers’ worldwide have
proven the Willis bros surfboards helping them to
gain international recognition as greatly respected
surfboard shapers. Surfing Magazine has said Michael
Willis is one of the top 5 great surfboard shapers
in the world.
In 1993
the Willis brothers stared in the B.B.C. Gold medal
award winning documentary titled “Walking on Water”
Based on the popular book by Andy Martin “Walking
on Water” featuring the Willis brothers. The Willis
brothers appear in numerous books, magazines, books,
videos and films.
January
25, 1998 the Willis brothers paddled into history by
surfing the 1st ever code black in the state of Hawaii.
On this epic day in surfing waves were estimated at
over 50 feet.
Jan 28th 1998 the second
ever code black in the history of Hawaii produced waves
estimated up to 100 feet. For those
select few who lived it and the thousands of viewers
who witnessed this great surfing day
it will long be remembered as the swell that opened
up the door of possibilities and the benchmark swell
of which all giant waves are measured. The Willis bros
are credited with surfing twice on the day many of the
world’s best big wave surfers chose to
sit out. Surfing experts the Willis bros. Milton
Willis and Michael Willis are recognized world wide
for surfing the worlds largest waves, building surfboards,
teaching surfing, authors, media consultants, and of
foremost importance “Exemplifying the spirit of
surfing”-Surfing Magazine.
