Ross Clark Jones, Tony Ray, Milton Willis, Michael Willis, and Ted Schmidt made big wave surfing history by surfing some the of the world's largest waves ever paddled into to this date. These brave souls accomplished this during Hawaii's first ever condition black. (Illegal to surf, beaches closed)

 

On this day in great surfing history, Biggest Wednesday-Condition Black, the Willis Bros. surfed twice. Once in the morning (when the swell had reached full impact) and again in the afternoon (when the swell had dropped to 50ft.+). The only ones to challenge the extreme high surf twice.

 

Cheyne Horan, Sam Hawk, and the Willis Bros. were the first ones out at Outer Log Cabins on the epic swell, Biggest Wednesday-Condition Black.

 

World tow-surfing champion, Garret Mcnamara, learned his trade with the Willis Bros. on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

 

On the biggest swell ever recorded at Todos Santos, 60% of the paddling surfboards and tow-in surfboards were Willis Bros. surfboards.

Surfing his way from the trials to the finals of the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii, Liam Mcnamara achieved his highest result in the contest on a Milton Willis shaped surfboard.

Milton Willis recieved the Certificate of Lifesaving Merit, from the city and county of Honolulu for a daring and successful rescue in extreme hazardous ocean conditions when he came to the rescue of a young mother swept off the beach by large waves on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. 

 

Big wave tow-in surfers, Ross Clark Jones and Tony Ray, started their tow-in surfing careers with the Willis Bros. and World Surfing Champion Cheyne Horan on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

Milton Willis: One of the many big wave surfing greats, North Shore of Oahu, HawaiiBig Wave Surfers: Well-traveled surfing experts the Willis Bros are recognized for surfing the worlds largest waves. They made surfing history having surfed the first ever code black (beaches officially closed) on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Surfing massive waves at Waimea Bay estimated at 50 feet and higher the brothers along with Ross Clark-Jones and Tony Ray of Australia rode some of if not the largest waves ever paddled into. This year the Willis Bros both were Surfing magazine’s unofficial $50,000 big wave challenge winners.

Pioneer Tow Surfers: Michael and Milton Willis are recognized for tow surfing into the world’s largest waves on Hawaii’s 2nd code black Jan 98 in front of thousands of onlookers. Some people estimated waves well in excess of 100 feet. Michael and Milton Willis along with partners legendary Cheyne Horan and Sam Hawk were the first ones to go out. Of the few surfers that made surfing history this day, the Willis bros did it twice first surfing in the morning when the swell had full impact and then again in the afternoon when the swell had dropped to 80 feet plus.

Today Michael and Milton teach others how to surf big waves both in the ocean and on land. Ocean safetyMarine safety experts: Both Willis brothers are certified professional rescuers. The Willis brothers have performed successful rescues under extreme hazardous conditions many times. Sharing their vast ocean experience they have accumulated over years they have taught and continue to teach thousands how to be safer in the ocean.

Milton Willis is recognized with a certificate of successful rescue under extreme hazardous surf conditions from the City and County of Honolulu for putting his life on the line (once again) in a dramatic mothers day rescue on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He is credited with saving many lives including twin sisters in a intense rescue, which was written about by the North Shore Surfing News. Many of the reccues Milton has preformed have been in high surf.

Michael Willis is credited with many life saving rescues risking his own life. Many of Michael’s rescues take place in large surf. Michael is credited with pulling Hawaiian David Kahanamoku out of the jaws of the famous Waimea Bay shore break after Kahanamoku had suffered a broken ankle. In one of the most extreme rescues ever-recorded Michael rescued legendary Hawaiian big wave surfer, Titus Kinimaka saving his life. The Hawaiian surfer from Kauai wiped out breaking his leg on a huge wave at Waimea Bay in Hawaii. With powerful 20-foot waves on the outside and a dangerous 10-foot pounding shore break on the inside there was no way to get Kinimaka to the shore safely. After securing the situation and calling in back up Michael used reassuring words and his body heat protecting Kinimaka from hypothermia and going into shock. This successful rescue ended up involving a group of great surfers and a helicopter. Andy Martin wrote about this dramatic rescue in his book the cult classic Walking on Water.

WB Surfing lessons in San Diego and HawaiiSurfing Instruction: The Willis brothers have taught thousands to successfully surf. In 1972 they were instrumental in instigating the nations first surfing P.E. for high schools at San Dieguito H.S. in Encinitas, California. In the 80’s the Willis bros headed an all star surf team including Johnny Boy Gomes, Liam McNamara, Garrett McNamara, Jason Majors, Ali Kai Kinimaka, Titus Kinimaka, Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, David Cantrell, Maile Orion and others. Many consider these surfers some of the all time greatest.

Surfing promotes positive life values and skills crucial for success that can be applied to personal, family, school, and community relationships. Wbsurfing programs benefit inner city youth, disadvantaged children, mentally or physically challenged individuals and others. When you bring a child or teen to the beach the natural surroundings are ideal for learning and growing. Teens and pre-teens learn more than how to surf they learn what they can do and most importantly how to ride the waves of success.
